Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Coronary Intervention Case to be Presented at Annual Statewide EMS Conference

Presentation Highlights Coordination with Emergency Medical Personnel in the Treatment of Heart Attack Patients

Rockville, MD – An emergency coronary intervention case from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital will be highlighted at the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Continuing Education Conference, EMS Care 2012 – Broad Horizons, this weekend in Ocean City, MD. Dr. Michael R. Castine, M.D., F.A.C.C., Interventional Cardiologist for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital will present his case, which focuses on the deadliest type of heart attack known as STEMI (ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction) and highlights the expert care Shady Grove Adventist Hospital provides to heart attack patients through effective coordination with emergency personnel.

Several other health care facilities across Maryland will present STEMI cases at the two-day conference, which will highlight how successful coordination of pre-hospital and hospital care resources can save lives.

“It is vital that emergency medical personnel and hospital care teams work together so that we can provide the best outcomes for our patients,” says Dr. Castine. “I am pleased to help educate other pre-hospital and hospital emergency personnel about how to effectively implement this coordination to result in better treatment of heart attack patients.”

The annual conference is organized by Maryland’s Regional EMS Advisory Councils and the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMMS). It includes emergency professionals such as pre-hospital EMS providers, nurses and fire and rescue personnel as well as hospital care teams. The conference also includes several workshops, opportunities to earn continuing education credits and discussions on other medical emergency topics.

“During a heart attack, minutes matter and calling 9-1-1 is the quickest way to receive life-saving treatment,” says Debbie Truxillo, Director of Cardiac and Vascular Services for Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “It is critical that people call 9-1-1 immediately if they are experiencing signs of a heart attack such as chest, throat or upper abdominal discomfort; shortness of breath; and cold sweats, nausea or lightheadedness.”

In addition to presenting at this conference, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has received several recent recognitions for its expert cardiac care. These include accreditation as a Cycle III Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) in March and The Mission: Lifeline Silver Performance Achievement Award in 2011, signifying that the hospital met the American Heart Association’s highest goals for quality care in STEMI patients over 12 consecutive months.
