U.S. News & World Report Recognizes Washington Adventist Hospital and Shady Grove Adventist Hospital as High Performing in Eight Specialty Areas

Rockville, MD – In its annual ranking of the best hospitals in the United States, U.S. News & World Report recognized Washington Adventist and Shady Grove Adventist Hospitals as high performing in eight specialty areas. Among the specialty area recognitions were Cardiology & Heart Surgery at Washington Adventist Hospital, and Geriatrics and Diabetes at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

“This year marks 50 years in cardiac excellence since Washington Adventist Hospital’s first heart surgery in 1962, and this national recognition for our program helps demonstrate our continued commitment to delivering high-quality heart care now and into the future,” said Joyce Newmyer, President of Washington Adventist Hospital. “I commend our physicians and employees in all our recognized specialty areas for their focused work to deliver safe, exceptional care to our patients.”

“The caregivers at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital strive every day to deliver superior health-care services to all our community, and we’re pleased to be recognized for the care we provide our seniors and those living with diabetes,” said Dennis Hansen, President of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “This type of recognition is a direct reflection of the hard work and skill of our dedicated physicians and staff.”

In each specialty in which a hospital is a candidate, U.S. News & World Report scores the area based on four elements: reputation, patient survival, patient safety and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. Washington Adventist Hospital was recognized as high performing in a total of four areas: Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, and Neurology & Neurosurgery. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital was also recognized as high performing in four areas: Geriatrics, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and Nephrology.

Both hospitals have been continually recognized for the quality care provided to patients with many serious health conditions. Recent recognition includes:

  • Accredited as a Chest Pain Center by The Society of Chest Pain Centers.
  • Designated as a Cardiac Interventional Center by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services and Systems (MIEMSS).
  • Designated as a Primary Stroke Center by MIEMSS.
  • Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.
