A Message to the Community about Children's Services at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital has had a long-standing commitment to providing a full range of quality health services for children. As the 4th largest provider of pediatric care in the state of Maryland, our hospital provides some of the most specialized children’s health care of any community hospital in the area including:

  • One of the highest level neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in the state, which provides care to critically ill newborns,
  • The area’s first and largest pediatric emergency department, which is staffed around the clock by an excellent team of board certified pediatric emergency physicians and highly qualified staff,
  • A specialized pediatric surgery unit and
  • A pediatric inpatient unit for children that provide around–the-clock hospital care.

At the core of these services are the outstanding physicians, nurses and other dedicated experts that care for children in our community on a daily basis.

Like many hospitals, over the past several months, the changing health-care landscape caused us to review how we dedicate our pediatric resources. Through this process, we determined that our six-bed pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), which offered specialized care to critically ill children and required significant, specialized staffing resources, was underutilized. As a result, in May, we phased out our pediatric intensive care services. You may have seen news stories about this change. The six beds were moved back into our pediatric inpatient unit, which continues to operate with 25 beds for around-the-clock children’s care.

This change does not impact our existing excellent pediatric services including the emergency department, which provides care to more than 22,000 children each year. If a child in our hospital requires care in a pediatric intensive care unit, they will be transferred through a seamless process that is already in place to one of several specialty medical centers in the region that provide this level of care.

I want to assure you that our commitment to providing quality care to children is unwavering. We look forward to carrying out our mission and to finding new and creative ways to provide health care and services to children and adults in our community for many years to come.
