Adventist Hospitals Host Third Annual Love Your Heart Expo

Event provides free heart health screenings, cooking and exercise demonstrations, and heart healthy lectures

Rockville, Md. – On Saturday, February 11, Adventist HealthCare, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital will hold their third annual Love Your Heart Expo providing free heart health screenings and education to the public. The event will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Westfield Montgomery Mall in North Bethesda.

“We are excited to offer these valuable screenings at no cost to the public in order to improve heart health in our community,” said Amy Carrier, Associate Vice President, Clinical Service Lines for Adventist HealthCare. “We hope that our new location at Westfield Montgomery Mall will help us expand the number of screenings and services we can provide.”

The Love Your Heart event will feature six free heart healthy screenings; a cholesterol and glucose finger stick test, blood pressure, body composition, body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio and pulmonary function testing (PFT). After the screenings, clinical experts will provide one-on-one personal counseling sessions to discuss participants’ results.

In addition to screenings, Love Your Heart will include a heart healthy demonstration and education stage featuring lectures from Adventist HealthCare medical experts, heart healthy cooking demonstrations and exercise demonstrations. Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Chair of Cardiology Michael Chen, M.D., will speak about women and heart health with former heart attack patient and Mrs. Maryland International 2012 Deanna Linz. Also, Paul Massimiano, M.D., heart surgeon and program director of cardiac surgery at Washington Adventist Hospital, will discuss minimally invasive procedures for heart conditions, as well as overall heart health.

Dietitians from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital will share information on heart healthy nutrition while cooking demonstrations are performed and samples of heart-healthy meals are passed out. Also, the Shady Grove Adventist Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation team will perform seated stretching exercises with the audience and discuss the importance of stretching.

Experts from Adventist Rehabilitation Hospital of Maryland, Adventist Home Care Services and Adventist Behavioral Health will also be on hand to give advice.

Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes and collect giveaways, including the chance to win a free Apple iPad or Apple TV upon completion of all screenings at the Love Your Heart event. WTOP's Man About Town, Bob Madigan, will kick off the event with opening remarks on heart health at the stage area, and be on hand to meet and greet members of the community.

The 3rd Annual Love Your Heart Expo is being offered in partnership with WTOP Radio (103.5 FM) and Westfield Montgomery Mall. For more information about the event, visit
