Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s Cancer Program Receives Three-Year Accreditation with Commendation

Rockville, MD – The American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) has recognized Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s cancer program at the highest level, granting it accreditation with commendation. Shady Grove Adventist’s cancer program is one of only 1,500 in the nation to hold CoC accreditation, highlighting the excellence and quality of cancer services.

“At Shady Grove Adventist, it is our top priority to provide high-quality, whole-person care to patients and their families,” says John Sackett, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Adventist HealthCare and president of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “We are pleased to receive this designation for the sixth time from the American College of Surgeons, representing our ongoing commitment to improving the health of our community.”

In order to receive this distinction, the hospital must undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review every three years that evaluates how well the facility conforms to the quality-of-care standards for cancer programs. This year, Shady Grove Adventist achieved Silver Level for obtaining commendation in six out of seven categories.

“We follow these standards to ensure we are performing at our highest in quality and service of cancer care,” says Kevin Smothers, M.D., chief medical officer at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “I would like to thank our physicians, nurses and staff for their dedication to providing this level of care.”

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital first achieved CoC accreditation with commendation in 1998. In the most recent review, surveyors praised the hospital’s clinical trial program and multidisciplinary approach. Surveyors also made special mention of the comprehensive community needs assessment as a best practice model.

Last year, the Aquilino Cancer Center opened on the campus of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. The Center is the first of its kind in Montgomery County, offering personalized, expert care, with state-of-the-art technology and support services to treat various forms of cancer. Among its clinical and support services are some of the most advanced forms of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, rehabilitation and cancer diagnostics. The Center also offers nutrition counseling, social work, support groups and a resource area, as well as yoga, fitness and cooking classes. This multidisciplinary approach is a key component to the cancer program and is a hallmark of CoC accreditation.

“Our oncology team is always looking for new ways to provide the latest advances in cancer care,” says Joseph Haggerty, M.D., medical oncologist and chair of the cancer committee at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. “The Aquilino Cancer Center allows physicians to better collaborate on treatment plans so that patients can have the best possible outcome.”

In addition to the Cancer Center and inpatient care, the Adventist HealthCare Rockville Campus continues to offer screenings, educational programs and special services to the community aimed at the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, a not-for-profit, 313-bed acute care facility in Rockville, Md., is part of Adventist HealthCare’s system of complete health-care services. Shady Grove is nationally recognized in cancer care, cardiac and vascular services, orthopedics and joint replacement, and maternity and pediatric care.
