Adventist HealthCare to Continue Athletic Training and Concussion Program in 13 Montgomery County High Schools

Rockville, MDAdventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation will continue providing certified athletic trainers and concussion baseline testing in 13 of the 26 Montgomery County Public High Schools for the 2015-2016 school year. The county school board voted to continue the program at its May 12 meeting.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Montgomery County schools in order to ensure the continued health and safety of student athletes,” said Brent Reitz, president of Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation. “Thank you to Montgomery County for providing this continued opportunity to serve our community.”

The 13 high schools covered by Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation for the 2015-2016 school year are: Albert Einstein, Clarksburg, John F. Kennedy, Paint Branch, Northwest, Poolesville, Richard Montgomery, Rockville, Springbrook, Watkins Mill, Wheaton, Winston Churchill, and Thomas S. Wootton.

Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation first began providing concussion baseline testing and athletic training services to Montgomery County High Schools in 2013. Between August 2014 and February 2015, the team administered 2,302 baseline concussion tests and supported diagnosis and care for 143 documented concussions. The baseline exams, which are administered to all high school athletes in the county, assess neurocognitive functions including learning, problem solving and memory skills as well as concentration ability. In the event that an injury occurs, the exams are used to compare with post-injury tests. Athletic trainers work to keep athletes safe from the dangers of concussion and other sports injuries.

“Our team of athletic trainers and physicians is proud to work with Montgomery County Public Schools. Our athletic trainers will continue to provide sideline care and manage the return-to-play protocol to keep young athletes healthy and safe,” said Elizabeth Kotroba, Director of Outpatient Therapy.

Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation has a comprehensive concussion program that serves adolescents and adults ages 14 and older who have incurred a head injury. Upon entry into the program, an initial evaluation is performed by an interdisciplinary team to determine the presence or level of an injury. In 2008, Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation became the first hospital in a five-state region to obtain accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International in all four specialty areas – brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and stroke. This designation recognized the quality care provided to patients in these areas.

Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation is the first and only acute rehabilitation hospital in Montgomery County. The facility first opened its doors in January 2001 to offer specialized inpatient and outpatient treatment for persons with functional limitations. Services include comprehensive rehabilitation programs for brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, strokes, amputations, orthopedic injuries and surgeries, sports- related injuries, work-related injuries, cardiopulmonary conditions and neurological disorders. Adventist HealthCare Physical Health & Rehabilitation is part of the Adventist HealthCare system, which is based in Gaithersburg, Maryland and includes hospitals, home health agencies and other healthcare services.
