Adventist HealthCare Offers New, Wireless Breast Surgery Option

Advanced technology makes day of procedure easier for woman

Gaithersburg, MDAdventist HealthCare is using a new, wireless breast surgery option for women that will help improve their experience while undergoing breast-conserving surgery, a procedure that removes cancer while leaving as much of the breast as possible.

The new technology, called SAVI SCOUT®, is now being offered at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center and Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Breast Center as part of the health system’s comprehensive breast care program. SAVI SCOUT® eliminates the need for wire localization, a surgical procedure using local anesthesia performed the day of surgery. It helps surgeons locate lumps, tumors, and breast lesions by using a wireless reflector.

The technology is radiation-free, causes no issues with MRI or Ultrasound scans, and can be performed by a radiologist weeks or months prior to surgery in the comfort of an outpatient facility. This means that on the day of the breast surgery, the patient undergoes one less procedure, is more comfortable and has better results, resulting in an improved overall experience.

“We’re excited to bring this new technology to our patients,” says Dr. Sonya Kella, director of the Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Breast Center. “It will mean more flexibility and comfort for patients, and even more reliability for our physicians.”

The reflector emits a tiny amount of non-radioactive energy that is not harmful to the body. On the day of surgery, the breast surgeon uses a device to locate it and the breast abnormality. The SAVI SCOUT® device is then removed at the time of surgery.
