Help Stop the FluAbout Help Stop the Flu

Help Stop the Flu is Adventist HealthCare’s campaign to educate the community on the importance of annual flu vaccinations. Our goal is to keep you and your family informed and healthy before and during the flu season.

Did You Know?

  • Young children and elders are at higher risk of developing flu-related complications, like pneumonia and bronchitis
  • Maryland reports widespread Type A flu activity during the winter months
  • Adults lose nearly three days of work fighting off the flu

Catching the flu virus is preventable when you and your family get vaccinated. Getting your annual flu shot can prevent you from catching Type A and other common flu strains, flu-related complications and spreading the disease to your family and coworkers.

Flu FAQs

What is the flu?

The flu is a contagious respiratory virus that can lead to mild and severe illness. When the flu strikes, it can affect anyone. The flu virus has been responsible thousands of untimely deaths, hospitalizations and more severe medical conditions. Getting the flu vaccine annually reduces your chance of catching the flu, makes the virus less severe if you do catch it and prevents you from spreading the flu to others.

How can I tell if I have the flu?

Common symptoms range in severity and include:

  • Fever/ chills
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Headache
  • Runny or stuffy nose

How can I keep my family protected against the flu?

Preventing the spread of germs is key to staying protected against the flu. Here are some tips to keep you and your family safe:

  • Get the flu vaccine
  • Wash your hands with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • If you suspect you have the flu, stay at home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs.

Should I get the flu vaccine?

In general, everyone 6 months of age or older should get the flu vaccine every season. Those with severe allergies to the vaccine, who have had Guillain-Barré Syndrome and who are not feeling well are the exception. Disclose this information to the person who is administering your vaccine if this applies to you.

What are the potential side effects with the flu vaccine?

Some people experience soreness, redness, aches and other mild side effects after receiving the vaccine. Most reactions are mild and go away on their own after 1 or 2 days. The flu vaccine will not cause you to become sick with the flu.

Where can I go if I think I have the flu?

Each year, Adventist HealthCare vaccinates and treats thousands of area residents for the flu in our conveniently-located facilities. If you think you or your child has the flu, visit one of our Adventist HealthCare Urgent Care Centers.
