Our Shared History
In 1907, the Washington Sanitarium was founded with a focus on healing through wellness, pure food and relaxation in nature. Over time, key services were added including maternity care, an emergency department and one of the region’s first cardiac centers.
As part of our long-standing commitment to providing the best in high-quality care, Adventist HealthCare built a new, state-of-the-art medical center just six miles away in White Oak. This move in August of 2019 enabled additional services, private patient rooms, ample parking and doctor offices conveniently located on the larger campus.
To help care for recovering COVID-19 patients from May 2020 until March 2023 during the pandemic, Adventist HealthCare reactivated the former hospital in partnership with the state of Maryland to serve as a COVID-19 Alternate Care Site (ACS).
To honor the legacy of this campus, Adventist HealthCare will now prepare the site to be able to attract new possibilities for the community of Takoma Park.
