The CNA Academy at Adventist HealthCare

The CNA Academy at Adventist HealthCare is an innovative program designed to support those seeking to start a career in patient care services as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). The Academy offers classroom and clinical training, in a hospital setting, to prepare candidates to pass the CNA certification exam.

The Academy is perfect for anyone eager to start a new career where they can make a difference in the lives of others in a work environment that strongly supports professional growth. No prior patient care experience is necessary.

Program Overview

The Academy operates four cohorts, each with 16 participants, per year. While training will be offered at Shady Grove and White Oak Medical Centers, upon earning their certificate candidates will be placed in CNA positions throughout Adventist HealthCare.

Program Features

The Academy is different from other programs because it removes many of the barriers that often keep people from pursuing this career path. The program offers:

  • FREE Tuition - We eliminate program fees so aspiring CNAs can focus on their studies instead of worrying about how to pay for training
  • FREE Books & Supplies - We also provide training books, a set of scrubs and stethoscope free of charge to eliminate the added financial burden of supplies
  • Salary + Benefits - We hire our CNA candidates so they can earn money and full benefits while they learn
  • Expert Guidance - We offer a quality classroom learning experience under the guidance of a dedicated nurse educator, so candidates gain knowledge in best practices for clinical outcomes and patient experience
  • Hospital Setting - We provide real-life clinical training in a hospital setting so candidates can learn practical, real-world skills to prepare for the challenges of working at the bedside in acute care
  • Six-week Training - Candidates complete training in six weeks so they're well positioned to pass the Maryland CNA exam and start working right away at one of our hospitals or in home health
  • Career Development - We open the door to new career opportunities by supporting participants through their CNA journey…and beyond!

Frequently asked questions about the CNA Academy.

What prior work experience is required?

Some applicants come with a variety of work experience, while others have only served in volunteer roles. Any experience is great – especially if you have worked in a caregiving or customer service environment – but most important in this role is the desire to provide compassionate care. Above all, we are seeking engaged and committed people whose values are in alignment with those of our organization.

How much does tuition cost?

Tuition is 100% FREE! In fact, our CNA Trainees are paid while they learn. If selected, you will be hired as an employee of Adventist HealthCare before the start of the program and start earning right away.

What supplies will I need to purchase for this program?

Supplies are free too! We will provide everything you need for success including textbooks, a set of scrubs, and personal protective equipment.

What is the time commitment for the training program?

The training period is six weeks long and prepares trainees for CNA licensure exam. The first four weeks of instruction are classroom-based with skills training (8:00-4:30 Monday through Friday), followed by two weeks of clinical rotations (three 12-hour shifts). On average you will work 36 hours per week.

What is the time commitment beyond the training program?

We are committed to supporting your career with Adventist HealthCare! While we hope our Academy hires will enjoy many years of employment with the organization, we require a minimum work commitment of 18 months following completion of the program.

What happens when I pass the course?

Once you successfully complete the course and pass the certification exam, you will be placed in a CNA position at one of our hospitals right away! While the exam is administered by the program instructors, your licensure will be issued via the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Can I choose where I work?

Positions are available at our Shady Grove, White Oak, and Fort Washington Medical Center locations. We do our best to place you in the hospital of your choice, however it cannot always be guaranteed. Unit placements are determined based on the areas of greatest need, which are most often in the medical/surgical departments.

How many training opportunities do you offer per year?

We have four cohorts per year with start dates in February, April, July and October.

How many people are in each cohort?

Each cohort will have up to 16 spots available.

Will I be eligible for benefits?

Yes! Your benefits coverage begins immediately, provided that you enroll yourself and any eligible dependents within 31 days of your hire date.

What benefits does Adventist HealthCare offer?

We offer a variety of employee benefits to support your overall well-being. These include:

  • Health insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • Prescription drug plans
  • Flexible Spending Account option
  • Dependent Care Account option
  • Tuition assistance for eligible employees
  • Employee Assistance Program offering wellness coaching and other resources
  • Retirement plans with employer contributions
  • Paid time off
  • Corporate discounts
  • And more!

Does Adventist HealthCare have opportunities for career growth?

Yes we do! Whether your goal is to remain a CNA or to pursue a career in another healthcare discipline, we will support you. Countless opportunities are available within our organization for those seeking to develop leadership skills or advance in their career. We also offer tuition assistance for eligible employees.

How long do the application periods remain open?

Because the volume of candidates may vary from one quarter to the next, there is no set ending date for the application periods. We will continue to accept applications until all 16 spots have been filled for that quarter.

How does the interview process work and when will I find out if I have been hired?

We review applications in the order they are received. If your resume passes the first screening, you usually can expect to hear from a recruiter within two weeks to schedule a phone interview. If the phone interview is successful, the recruiter will schedule you to meet virtually with a small interview panel. If the panel interview also goes well, candidates will typically receive a phone call from the recruiter with an employment offer within a week.
