The John & Effie Macklin CNA Academy

The John and Effie Macklin CNA Academy is an innovative program designed by Adventist HealthCare to support those seeking to start a career in patient care services as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). The academy offers classroom and clinical training, in a hospital setting, to prepare candidates to pass the CNA certification exam.

The academy is perfect for anyone eager to start a new career where they can make a difference in the lives of others in a work environment that strongly supports professional growth. No prior patient care experience is necessary.

Program Overview

The academy operates four cohorts, each with 16 participants, per year. While training will be offered at Shady Grove and White Oak Medical Centers, upon earning their certificate candidates will be placed in CNA positions throughout Adventist HealthCare.

The academy is different from other programs because it removes many of the barriers that often keep people from pursuing this career path. The program offers:

  • Six-week Training - Candidates complete training in six weeks so they're well positioned to pass the Maryland CNA exam and start working right away at one of our hospitals or in home health

While participating in the Macklin CNA program, not only will your tuition be free but you will also earn a salary and receive full benefits while in training. After passing the certification exam, you will then be placed directly into a CNA position at one of our hospitals.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Macklin CNA Academy.

What prior work experience is required?

Some applicants come with a variety of work experience, while others have only served in volunteer roles. Any experience is great – especially if you have worked in a caregiving or customer service environment – but most important in this role is the desire to provide compassionate care. Above all, we are seeking engaged and committed people whose values are in alignment with those of our organization.

How much does tuition cost?

Tuition is 100% FREE! In fact, our CNA Trainees are paid while they learn. If selected, you will be hired as an employee of Adventist HealthCare before the start of the program and start earning right away.

What supplies will I need to purchase for this program?

Supplies are free too! We will provide everything you need for success including textbooks, a set of scrubs, and personal protective equipment.

What is the time commitment for the training program?

The training period is six weeks long and prepares trainees for CNA licensure exam. The first four weeks of instruction are classroom-based with skills training (8:00-4:30 Monday through Friday), followed by two weeks of clinical rotations (three 12-hour shifts). On average you will work 36 hours per week.

What happens when I pass the course?

Once you successfully complete the course and pass the certification exam, you will be placed in a CNA position at one of our hospitals right away! While the exam is administered by the program instructors, your licensure will be issued via the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Can I choose where I work?

Positions are available at our Shady Grove, White Oak, and Fort Washington Medical Center locations. We do our best to place you in the hospital of your choice, however it cannot always be guaranteed. Unit placements are determined based on the areas of greatest need, which are most often in the medical/surgical departments.

How many training opportunities do you offer per year?

We have four cohorts per year with start dates in February, April, July and October.

How many people are in each cohort?

Each cohort will have up to 16 spots available.

Will I be eligible for benefits?

Yes! Your benefits coverage begins immediately, provided that you enroll yourself and any eligible dependents within 31 days of your hire date.
