5 Myths About Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are a common condition that affects three in ten adults. While initially varicose veins can be unsightly, if left untreated, they can turn into a more progressive vein disease called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI).

Although common, there are several myths surrounding this condition. Hamza Rana, MD, vein/vascular medicine specialist shares the truth about varicose veins and their treatments.

Myth: Varicose veins are only a cosmetic issue and can develop by sitting with your legs crossed.

Dr. Rana: Varicose veins are more than a cosmetic concern. If left untreated, they can cause additional health conditions. They are a sign of a damaged vein valve which in turn can impact circulation and lead to other health concerns. Sitting with your legs crossed does not contribute to varicose veins, however, sitting or standing for extended periods of time can contribute to developing varicose veins because your blood is not circulating properly.

Myth: Varicose veins only occur in woman and are due to pregnancy.

Dr. Rana: Varicose veins do not only occur in women. Although women are more at risk, men can also develop this condition. For women, pregnancy can increase your risk for developing varicose veins, but family history plays a part as well. If your parents or grandparents have varicose veins or CVI, you are more likely to develop them. Other risk factors that can increase your risk include certain health conditions like obesity and lifestyle factors like lack of physical activity, heavy lifting or long periods of standing or sitting.

Myth: Treatment is often painful, and recovery takes a long time.

Dr. Rana: The procedure to treat varicose veins and CVI is done in a doctor’s office through minimally invasive treatment options that reduce pain as well. Most patients report little or no pain during the procedure. Using minimally invasive treatment options allows you to return to daily activities with little to no downtime. During your initial appointment, your physician will assess your condition and decide the best course of treatment for you.

Myth: Only older people need to worry about varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.

Dr. Rana: Anyone of any age can develop varicose veins and CVI. As you age, your risk does increase, but the amount of sitting and standing for long periods of time can also affect your risk. If you sit during your workday, be intentional about getting up and walking every hour. If you stand for most of your workday, aim to find time to sit for periods throughout the day.

Myth: Wearing compression socks will fix any discomfort I have.

Dr. Rana: Treatment options like compression socks and exercise are available to help reduce symptoms and limit the progression of vein disease by promoting circulation. To fix the appearance of bulging or discolored veins and to treat any pain associated with poor circulating veins, additional treatment options may need to be explored. Your doctor can help find the right options for you.

Myth: Treatment isn’t covered by insurance.

Dr. Rana: Treatments that your doctor deems medically necessary are covered by most insurances, including Medicare. Contact your insurance company to understand what treatments and services they cover.

Varicose veins may seem like they are only a cosmetic issue, but if left untreated, they can lead to pain, aching, discoloration, skin changes and ulcers. If you are experiencing symptoms of heaviness, tiredness fatigue, swelling or pain in your legs, make an appointment with Dr. Rana at Adventist HealthCare Cardiac Associates Venous Health Center.
