A New Era of Maternal Care on the Shady Grove Campus

In summer 2024, Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center marked a significant milestone in our commitment to providing inclusive, accessible and comprehensive prenatal and postnatal care to our community.

The newly named Maternal Care Center, formerly known as our Women’s Center, moved next door to the hospital from Germantown.

Launched as the Shady Grove Prenatal Program in 2006 with Montgomery County, the center delivers essential maternity care to expectant mothers who do not qualify for medical assistance or traditional insurance. Serving approximately 350 patients annually, the center has grown into an indispensable resource for women and families, particularly those navigating financial or logistical challenges.

Birth Center leaders made the decision to move the center from Germantown to improve convenience for patients. “We have always needed to be closer to the hospital,” said Amber Richter, RN, manager of Labor and Delivery at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. “Many of our patients use public transportation and getting from the Germantown location to the hospital was a challenge.” The new site, located at 9715 Medical Center next door to the hospital, is a short walking distance from the Labor and Delivery Unit, ensuring that patients have immediate access to necessary testing, procedures and specialized care.

In addition, the renaming of the center reflects a broader, more inclusive vision. By adopting the name “Maternal Care Center,” we acknowledge the diverse gender identities of our patient population, while still offering the same expert care. This evolution highlights our dedication to serving our community with enhanced efficiency, inclusivity and compassion—meeting the growing needs of families in the region.
