Amy: Volunteering Today, Dentistry Tomorrow

“To be blessed with this exceptional educational experience, good health and with good hands for dentistry are great gifts. However, gifts are not selfish things. They are given as generous acts and should be used as such.” – Amy, Junior Volunteer Scholarship recipient

As a junior volunteer, Amy worked in the Labor and Delivery Unit at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center alongside the nursing team. Her dedication to supporting the care of new moms and their babies at the hospital helped her earn a 2025 Junior Volunteer Scholarship.

The Birth Center team provides high-quality maternity and newborn care, all shaped by a family’s vision for their ideal labor experience. Amy says her work supporting The Birth Center team meant a great deal to her. She hopes those moments will be building blocks to her dream of a future in healthcare.

Along with volunteering at the hospital in high school, Amy studied in Montgomery County’s Science, Mathematics and Computer Science Magnet Program, taking eight courses each semester. Amy’s interest in science and healthcare extended into her extracurriculars, which included membership in Health Occupations Students of America– Future Health Professionals. In 2023, Amy won third place at their International Dental Terminology Competition.

That prize is part of her big plans for the future: a career in dentistry. Amy hopes to provide free dental care globally, helping in areas where dental services are inaccessible. She is continuing her education at Case Western Reserve University in its Pre-Professional Program.

Amy contributed a total of 234 volunteer hours at Shady Grove Medical Center. Director of Volunteers, Guest Services and Telecommunications Jewel Thompson said she is thrilled with the success of the Junior Volunteer program and students like Amy.  “They are in the perfect volunteer job to bridge the gap with our customers and provide world-class service,” she explained.

In her scholarship acceptance speech, Amy shared the impact of her time with the hospital and the scholarship: “I can’t put into words how much it means to me. I may be one person, but I hope I can repay all of you in many ways.”
