Because of You
“How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?” (1 Thessalonians 3:9, NIV).
It seems to me that this is one of the most powerful texts in the Christian Scriptures. It is an expression of appreciation in the form of a question. It is contained in a letter that the Apostle Paul, one of the earliest champions of the Christian message, wrote to the group of believers in Thessalonica, a town in Northern Greece.
Paul is writing to them from Corinth, after a long absence, and he is writing in a very personal way to express his appreciation for what they mean to him.
During this week, throughout Adventist HealthCare we are celebrating Employee Appreciation. And here is my own personal expression of appreciation for what our AHC team means to me.
Paul is writing to this group of believers after they have come through a particularly difficult time. I am writing this as we have come through a difficult time together. The statistics alone can’t really communicate how challenging these last endless months have been. It is impossible to know how the pandemic has challenged and burdened each of you. Thank you for your faithfulness amidst great adversities.
Like the apostle, I believe that your presence here is a gift from God. It is a gift that goes beyond your contribution to this organization or what Adventist HealthCare can do for you. It is a gift that is deeply rooted in our Mission: What will we discover and what will God do through us when we work together? How will we become the fulfillment of our Mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing?
To a group of people who have experienced great adversity, the apostle writes of joy. We know that this is possible! Each day brings the devastating challenges of suffering and pain, alongside the joy that comes from recovery and healing, and the profound hopes that accompany births and new life. These are all part of our experience together in our shared ministry of healing and hope.
And, echoing the apostle, this is because of you! You are the reason why we can pursue our Mission with faithfulness; you are the reason why we succeed; you are the reason why our communities look to us with confidence and you are the reason why our lights are on and our doors are open every single day.
To each of you—all of our Adventist HealthCare team members—thank you! Your presence here is a gift from God. Your work makes a joyful difference. Good things happen every day throughout our organization because of you!
