Meet Jason
Jason joined Adventist HealthCare just one year ago as a Call Specialist with the Shady Grove Behavioral Health team, and in that short time, he’s discovered meaningful purpose in the work. After moving back to the U.S. from Japan and making a major career pivot, Jason was drawn to the faith-aligned values and the chance to better understand mental health, especially as a parent of a child with autism. He now uses both his analytical strengths and softer skills to support patients, collaborate closely with his team, and bring compassion to every interaction. A natural problem-solver, Jason quickly made an impact by identifying referral trends across hospitals — a proud moment that reaffirmed he’s right where he’s meant to be. For Jason, Adventist HealthCare is a place where service, stewardship, and belonging truly come to life.
Q&A with Jason
We recently sat down with Jason to learn more about her time at Adventist HealthCare.
What inspired you to pursue this career and why?
Moving back to the states from Japan about two years ago I was given a chance to do a complete career pivot and do something career wise I hadn't thought of before. My background is marketing and manufacturing, so I have had no background in the healthcare industry before. When I moved to Rockville with my family, I knew Adventist was a company I wanted to work for so was eager just to get my foot in the door. I wanted to work for the company for two reasons. One, core values and a built-in honor code that requires standards. This reminded me of College at BYU-Idaho, so personally, it creates a niche where I feel I work with those with similar backgrounds in a company that is faith-driven. Second, I wanted to gain a better understanding of mental health. My oldest has autism, and I wanted to understand this better and, in turn, how to be a better parent for him. Since starting in my current role, I have learned softer skills that help navigate that at home, which is a huge blessing for me.
What drew you to Adventist HealthCare initially?
Having gone to a religiously affiliated college out west in Idaho, I was keen to see that the values here at Adventist HealthCare are very similar. It is structured in a way that allows that expression without being too forward on it at the same time. It creates a haven where you know morals exist innately, and for me, that was a huge selling point. The RISES values show and demonstrate that clearly. I love that each major meeting starts with a prayer. I like feeling that aspect of not forgetting God even in the mundane daily things where it can be easy to at times.
How has your career evolved since you joined Adventist HealthCare?
I have gained more confidence in an industry that, a year ago, I probably fell into the stigma of mental health and how to help those with it. Now I see the true benefits of it, and yes, it has made me a softer parent. Career-wise I have been able to connect, grow, and utilize some of my out-of-industry skills, and for that I am grateful.
Can you share a specific moment when you felt proud of your work or your growth here?
This came when I noticed a set of patterns and trends with a hospital that was referring patients. From this initial pattern, I then grew the data I was collecting to encompass all referring hospitals that we had taken referrals for behavioral health. Being able to share my findings was a proud moment for me.
How would you describe the culture at Adventist HealthCare and on your team?
Communicative. It might sound cliche, but we talk with each other throughout the process and help one another often. We aren't afraid to ask one another questions, especially when we need a second opinion on matters.
Can you share a story that illustrates what it’s like to work here?
There was an event during the summer that we got invited to off-site, and two of us were able to attend and mingle with staff from other departments. Due to our small team size, it can feel like we get lost in the shadows, but during the event, everyone was very kind and welcoming. We got to put faces to names of individuals we had spoken with on the phone weekly and this created a unique sense of belonging truly to the larger team.
Which of our RISES values do you resonate with the most and why?
Service and Stewardship. On many occasions, and it doesn't matter the team, individuals step in and offer service to one another in times of need. Whether this be coverage or helping to be a second voice to concerned family member. The Behavioral Health team as a whole truly rallies around each member no matter the position or team. With this comes true stewardship for those receiving treatment as well. People genuinely care for the patients and truly hope they get better. It isn't just a ‘going through the motions’ sort of thing, but rather a stewardship for those who enter through the doors.
What do you wish more people knew about working here?
You don't have to be a member of the Adventist faith to fit in here. Despite the name, they are welcoming to all religions, and for me, that helps me truly feel like a part of Service and Stewardship.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
Never be afraid to leap. Worst case it gives you exposure and you meet more people.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra you live by?
"What we do in life echoes in eternity." A movie quote from Gladiator. It applies to the daily things, including the mundane. Each day has a ripple that carries beyond just today, so make the moments count and bounce out of a funk quickly.
What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes outside of work?
Big football enthusiast and the outdoors. Nothing beats a good grilling session.
What’s your best tip to help people live healthier lives?
One step can make a difference. Even a change of one degree or one habit can completely change the course for us. Start with one and you will be amazed at how far that takes you.
