Meet Patricia

Patricia is an outpatient dietitian, serving cardiac rehab and colorectal patients across Shady Grove and White Oak Medical Centers. Inspired by her father’s health journey and the compassionate care he received, Patricia started a career in nutrition science. Since joining Adventist HealthCare, she’s found purpose and professional growth in a faith-based environment that aligns with her values. Whether collaborating with clinical teams or helping a single patient improve their health, Patricia finds meaning in every moment of her work.

Q&A with Patricia

We recently sat down with Patricia to learn more about her time at Adventist HealthCare.

What inspired you to pursue this career and why?

As my father's caregiver during his post coronary artery bypass graft surgery healing, I became incredibly fascinated with food science, nutrition, and anatomy. I was studying Business Marketing at that time, then switched majors to Nutrition Science. My father’s heart was ultimately my inspiration to become a Dietitian.

Can you describe your career background and how it led you to Adventist HealthCare?

Because of the wonderful care my father received at Washington Adventist HealthCare, my parents encouraged me to find employment within the Adventist HealthCare System as a Dietitian. I had been working at other facilities as an RD, as the opportunity to work for the Adventist HealthCare team had not yet crossed my path. I always had a passion for healthcare, however not for the facilities I was working for. I felt as if something was always missing. In the spring of 2021, was when my life was to change forever. The opportunity to work for the Adventist HealthCare system had finally arrived, so I immediately applied! The following day, my father had another heart attack. Within the madness of caring for my father during his return to the hospital, I received a call from a recruiter to come in for a job interview. Despite my father's declining condition and transfer to a tertiary center, my dad was ecstatic about the prospect of his daughter working for the Adventist HealthCare System. The day of my interview had come, 10 minutes before I was to meet my possible future boss, an Intensivist called to tell me that my sweet father was now in multi-organ failure. When I walked into SG hospital, I knew that the presence of The Lord was strong. My heart was broken yet somehow I just knew I was where I was supposed to be.

What drew you to Adventist HealthCare initially? Did anything specific about the company’s culture or values stand out when you joined?

The Lord showed me the path, and my faith pulled me in. His presence is everywhere, it is in the walls, in the air, and within the people here. I not only feel it, but I can see it through the eyes of those around me.

How has your career evolved since you joined Adventist HealthCare?

I never imagined that I would have the opportunities that Adventist HealthCare has gifted me. I have gotten to not only work with the outpatient population, but also collaborate with other departments within the healthcare system.

Can you share a story that illustrates what it’s like to work here?

Again, there are so many incredible stories which I see and experience on a daily basis that it is difficult to pinpoint only one. To work here is like watching the sun rise and set every day. What I mean by that is that the magnitude of love and compassion given to patients is as magnificent as watching the sun rise and fall.

Which of our RISES values do you resonate with the most and why?

I would say that the value of Service resonates the most with me because it reminds me of Mark 10:43-45:
"Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all, just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

What do you wish more people knew about working at Adventist HealthCare?

How wonderfully gratifying it is to serve and work with this community. It feels like home when I come to work.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

"No matter how many times you fall, keep on fighting to get up!" – My Dad

What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes outside of work?

I love to read, garden, hike, and swim.

What’s your best tip to help people live healthier lives?

Be present within every moment no matter how mundane, and eat your veggies!
