Envisioning Access to Sports Medicine Services Via an Online Platform

Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation is expanding access to rehabilitation options for sports medicine patients via a comprehensive online platform.

“Within Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation, our goal is to provide world-class care to patients, and this comprehensive Sports Medicine Program will provide treatment options and facilitate interactions across the spectrum of sports medicine services,” said Trey Godwin, MD, a board-certified physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at CAQ Sports Medicine and sports medicine physician at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation. “Our physicians can take the time necessary to appropriately diagnose patients’ conditions and identify risk factors that may have led to the presenting condition, for example, abnormal biomechanics or suboptimal training regimens.”

A Competitive Edge on Sports Medicine Services

The experienced therapists at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation deliver sports medicine services to athletes of all ages and skill sets.

“Our existing comprehensive sports medicine services include treatment for musculoskeletal injuries, comprehensive concussion care, nonsurgical and surgical solutions for injuries, and a wide spectrum of rehabilitation services,” Dr. Godwin said. “We also provide sports performance services for athletes who want to improve their athletic performance and prevent injury.”

Therapists with our program specialize in caring for conditions that affect bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons, offering treatment for:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Broken bones
  • Joint dislocations
  • Herniated spinal discs
  • Knee complications, including torn meniscus or ACL injury
  • Overuse injuries, such as shin splints and tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff tear
  • Sciatica
  • Sprains and strains

Our team also offers sports rehabilitation to help patients who have had orthopedic surgery safely heal and recover.

Tailoring each patient’s treatment plan to meet their unique needs is key to our philosophy of care: helping patients realize their goals by improving their function. This process typically begins with a complimentary injury screening or a functional movement test. Once we have assessed a patient’s condition, our providers work with the patient to design a treatment strategy that may include the following:

  • AlterG® Anti-Gravity TreadmillTM Therapy
  • Dry needling
  • Kinesio® taping
  • Manual therapy
  • McConnell taping
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy

In addition to providing solutions for existing sports medicine conditions, we offer athletic training to help individuals avoid injuries and exercise safely. Students are an essential part of the population we serve. Providers with our Sports Medicine Program work with coaches, trainers and parents at local public high schools to help young athletes excel in their favorite activities.

We also have neuropsychology experts and athletic trainers on hand to provide robust support for athletes in need of concussion services, offering free baseline concussion tests to students in our local community high schools. During these baseline tests, we measure a student’s thinking skills, problem-solving ability, capacity to focus during an hour-long exam, and ability to learn and memorize new information. If a child endures head trauma, we conduct the same test and compare results to determine the severity of the injury and how the child is healing during treatment.

Taking Our Options Online

The new online platform will help patients navigate through our diverse services, helping ensure they receive the specialized care they need to address their particular concern.

“The website will provide information regarding the physical services provided by Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation’s comprehensive Sports Medicine Program and highlight the interactions and roles of each component of the sports program,” Dr. Godwin said. “Patients will be able to directly contact a navigator who will connect them with the needed service.”

The patient interaction with the navigator can take place over the phone, eliminating the need for an office visit.

“There will be one phone number patients can call where they will be provided assistance with scheduling necessary care,” Dr. Godwin said. “The navigator will be able to schedule patients with me, a nonoperative sports medicine physician, or directly with orthopedic colleagues if needed.”

The navigator can also provide integration with additional services, including occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, sports performance and comprehensive concussion services.

The Power of Connection

The comprehensive Sports Medicine Program empowers providers and patients alike. Providers can utilize a tool that helps them learn more about relevant services and connect patients to them when appropriate, and patients can more easily find and understand the resources available to them.

Calling one single phone number makes accessing care as seamless as possible, and the online platform allows for unparalleled access to care and support to help them understand sports medicine services available to them.

“This offers an improved way for patients to access many of the existing sports medicine services within Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation, optimized interactions between those services, and additional services offered in the future,” Dr. Godwin said.
