Healthy Aging Month
Healthy Aging Month is an annual observance month designed to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older. Healthy Aging Month aims to promote taking personal responsibility for one’s total health, including physical, social, mental and financial aspects.
TIPS FOR HEALTHY AGING
The list below outlines some ideas of how to maintain good health and wellness in various aspects of your life while you are aging.
- Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy brain and body
- Maintain a healthy diet with nutrient-dense foods like fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid foods high in sodium, often found in pre-packaged foods and restaurant meals.
- Keep your brain active! Try reading, learning an instrument or taking a class to continue challenging your mind.
- Stay social by staying in involved with volunteering, community classes and making time to see friends.
- Maintain communication with friend and family, especially after a significant loss or life change.
- Establish a good sleep schedule and make sure to get plenty of rest (7-9 hours per night).
- Practice yoga and other relaxation techniques to improve balance, strength and reduce stress
- Practice health prevention by seeing your doctor regularly, getting a yearly flu vaccine, washing your hands, wearing supportive footwear, etc.
- Keep a list of your health concerns and current prescriptions for your doctor’s visits. Do not be afraid to ask your doctor questions.
- Complete your Advance Directive in case of an emergency.

- Read the nutrition label when buying food
- Ask your doctor about taking vitamins and supplements
