How to Protect Yourself from Sunburn

Now that Summer is here most of us will be spending more time outdoors. Whether it’s at the pool or at a baseball game, the sun will be out.

Although sun exposure offers many benefits, too much exposure can be dangerous. Sunburn is caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, either from the sun or an artificial light source. Even if the sun is not shining bright, you can still get sunburnt on a cloudy or hazy day. Surfaces that reflect the UV light such as water, snow, and sand can also cause sunburn.


  • Pinkness or redness of the skin
  • Skin feels warm or hot to the touch
  • Swelling


  • Small fluid-filled blisters
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Nausea and fatigue

Most of us have suffered from a sunburn before and healed just fine from it, but when sunburn occurs regularly you increase your risk for premature aging of your skin, precancerous skin lesions, skin cancer, and even eye damage.


  • Avoid sun exposure when the suns rays are strongest, usually between 10:00am and 4:00pm.
  • Cover up with a hat or outdoor gear that protects from sun exposure.
  • Use sunscreen frequently, and wear sunglasses.
  • Be aware of any medications that increase your sensitivity to the sun.


  • Try to avoid overexposure to the sun
  • If you experience severe symptoms, seek medical help from a doctor
  • Know that you can still get sunburnt even on a cloudy day
