In Appreciation: National Social Work Month

March is National Social Work Month, providing the perfect opportunity to express appreciation to the legion of social workers on our team: Your work makes such a difference in our work. I am not sure how one could accurately measure the immense value social workers bring to our patients, their families, and our team members.

Often the first connecting point we have with a patient is through the efforts of a social worker. Social workers are aware of the entire range of community resources available that may be useful, and they are skilled at bringing people together to find ways to meet challenges that may influence and complicate how people respond to treatment. They help patients develop strategies for dealing with the stress that may accompany sudden illness.

The 650,000 social workers in the United States are advocates for those who may be vulnerable or have limited access to healthcare, and they are champions for those who are fighting back against the impact of a catastrophic change in health. Social workers are indispensable to our healthcare teams.

It is an honor and privilege for all of us at Adventist HealthCare to be so closely aligned with so many outstanding professional social workers. On behalf of our patients, their families, and all of those who work alongside you—thank you for what you do each day to assist us in our mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental, and spiritual healing.
