NAMI in the Lobby

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center’s Behavioral Health Services is partnering with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Montgomery County to offer support and resources to families whose loved ones are in a mental health crisis.

Through a program called NAMI in the Lobby, the alliance’s volunteers will be available in the Shady Grove Medical Center Emergency Department to help families with loved ones who need mental health treatment. The volunteers will provide emotional support, guide families on what to expect during a loved one’s care and connect them to resources in the community.

“The exciting thing about NAMI in the Lobby is the focus on patients and families whose loved ones do not meet the criteria for inpatient care, but who still need services,” said Nyree Price, Director of Needs Assessment with Shady Grove’s Behavioral Health team. “This program will serve as a liaison to connect patients and families with providers.”

The program is especially helpful for loved ones new to the mental healthcare system, she noted.

“Family members, when it’s their first time dealing with a mental health crisis and engaging with services, don’t know what to expect or where to follow up. NAMI in the Lobby will help capture the individuals who need that guidance.”
