New Addition to Shady Grove Medical Center's Robotic Joint Replacement Program
In 2017, Shady Grove Medical Center became the first hospital in the area to perform a minimally-invasive total knee replacement using the MAKOPLASTY® Robotic System.
Now, just three years later, Shady Grove Medical Center is the first in the area to utilize another high-tech robotic system for joint replacement, the ROSA® Knee System, expanding options for orthopedic surgery patients.
HOW IS ROSA® DIFFERENT FROM OTHER SYSTEMS?
While other robotic systems are limited on the type of implant that can be used, ROSA® is an open-platform system, so doctors can have more flexibility in selecting a joint for each patient.
“Because of its built-in imaging capabilities, ROSA® does not require costly and time-consuming preoperative imaging,” says Sridhar Durbhakula, MD, orthopedic surgeon at Shady Grove Medical Center. “It also adapts to the normal surgical workflow of each surgeon.”
HOW WILL ROSA® IMPROVE KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY?
ROSA® requires less muscle dissection and easily adapts to the technique of each surgeon. Patients may see faster recovery and better results, with less bleeding, less muscle pain and a shorter hospital stay.
“ROSA® makes it possible for surgeons to create a procedure plan and reliably execute it with the real-time feedback and accuracy of the robot,” says Joseph Hanna, MD, orthopedic surgeon.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BRINGING ROSA® TO SHADY GROVE MEDICAL CENTER?
“ROSA® improves surgical accuracy without the additional costs, time, and implant limitations of other systems,” Dr. Durbhakula says.
Adding the ROSA® to the collection of high-caliber robots also puts Shady Grove Medical Center at the forefront of technological advances in joint replacement surgery.
“With MAKOPLASTY® and now ROSA®, Shady Grove Medical Center joins a select group of hospitals nationwide that can proudly promote a true robotic joint replacement program,” Dr. Durbhakula says, “along with a certified joint center accreditation, five-star patient safety rating and an outpatient joint program.”
Drs. Durbhakula, Hanna, Andrew Bender and Douglas Murphy began using ROSA® at Shady Grove Medical Center in January 2020.
