Heeling Power: Facility Dog Program Poised to Expand

Find out why Newsweek named Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation Rockville one of the nation’s top rehabilitation hospitals for the third year in a row.

After a traumatic injury or major surgery, one of the most important decisions patients can make is whom to trust for what may be a complex rehabilitation journey. To help patients identify the nation’s premier rehabilitation facilities, Newsweek partnered with Statista, a global leader in data and business intelligence, to rank America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers.

These rankings provide people with valuable information to aid in decision-making. Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation Rockville has again ranked among the top rehabilitation hospitals for the third consecutive year.

“We strive to deliver world-class rehabilitation in Montgomery County so the people we serve don’t need to travel outside of their community to get the best possible care,” said Rob Grange, vice president of Post-Acute Care Services and administrator at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak. “This ranking represents our high-quality clinical care and the skillset of our teams, the design of our programs, and the processes and procedures we have in place.”

Newsweek’s rankings recognized 300 inpatient rehabilitation facilities out of more than 1,100 across the United States. Results are based on surveys submitted by experts in the field, accreditation data and publicly available quality metrics.

High-Quality Care for a Wide Range of Rehabilitation Needs

As the only acute rehabilitation center in Montgomery County, Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation provides comprehensive services that people can trust. Physical, occupational and speech therapists work collaboratively with board-certified physicians to personalize care for the specific needs of the people we serve. We offer rehabilitation programs for a wide range of conditions, including:

“As part of a nonprofit health system, we offer mission-driven, compassionate, whole-person care,” Rob said. “We have a culture of service, and many tenured team members view our work as a ministry. This sets us apart and also shows in our outcomes. Among the people we serve, functional improvement gains are larger and faster than our competitors.”

Team members work closely with one another, communicating frequently through weekly team conferences, daily huddles, individual patient schedules and updates shared with specialists/referring providers.

Quality and Convenience

In addition to exceptional services, we are always looking for ways to make care more convenient. The freestanding Rockville location is next to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. A second rehabilitation location in Montgomery County, within Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center, makes for a seamless hospital transfer into inpatient rehabilitation.

Both sites have added services for the convenience of the people we serve and their families.

“No matter where you are in the county, you’re not more than 20 minutes away from one of our inpatient rehab facilities,” Rob said. “Each one is also within about a mile of major roadways, so the convenience of our locations is very attractive.”

On-site dialysis is also available at both the Rockville and White Oak locations. Telepsychology services are available to address the mental health issues that often accompany rehabilitation patients.

“We realized psychiatrists are very hard to find, and that was keeping some people from getting care here, as we didn’t have the provider teams they needed,” Rob said. “So, we partnered with a telepsychology service to ensure that mental health is being managed while patients are receiving rehabilitation.”

Our team continually seeks to improve care with specialty services and personal touches. For example, we have partnered with Canine Companions, an organization that trains service and facility dogs and matches them with healthcare professionals and people with disabilities. Our facility dog, Peru, a trained half-Labrador and half-golden retriever, works with our rehabilitation psychologist to help the people we serve gain the skills needed to recover while offering emotional comfort and support. Peru sees patients in the White Oak location, and our facility dog program will expand to our Rockville location in 2025.

Top-Notch Technology

Rehabilitation technology is advancing rapidly. Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation is committed to staying at the forefront of technological innovation so our patients can benefit from the latest and greatest advances in care. Philanthropy helps make this possible.

Over the past three years, philanthropic donations have supported the purchase of a variety of patient care technologies. Our new Bioness Integrated Therapy System is a touchscreen device that helps the people we serve improve hand-eye coordination and memory. Most recently, we added a ZeroG Gait & Balance System to the Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation Rockville Outpatient Clinic. This ZeroG system uses a harness and overhead track system to help patients safely practice walking and build strength to reduce the risk of falling.

Dedication to Excellence

Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation was the first acute rehab facility to be certified by the Commission on Accredited Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) within a five-state area in all four of its specialty areas, including:

  • Amputation
  • Brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Stroke

Each specialty program continues to maintain CARF accreditation. This recognition means that these programs meet internationally recognized standards for quality, giving people served peace of mind that the facility is dedicated to continuous enhancement of services.

Accredited by The Joint Commission, Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation meets national standards for patient safety and the highest quality care. We also use the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality standards, developed by the American Society for Quality, as a guide when building and maintaining our processes and systems and when looking at ways to continue to improve and meet the needs of the people we serve.
