Putting Your Heart to the Test

What tests are used to diagnose heart problems? Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center experts help diagnose and treat a variety of cardiac conditions in both adults and children using the latest in imaging software.

IN ADULTS, OUTPATIENT TESTS INCLUDE:

2D ECHOCARDIOGRAM (CARDIAC ULTRASOUND)

Standard 2D imaging, which looks at the heart to identify whether it is functioning properly. Anyone that has suspected cardiac disease will have an echo performed.

ECHOCARDIOGRAM WITH STRAIN IMAGING

Test performed on cancer patients to screen for toxicity due to chemotherapy or radiation treatment. It can also be done to monitor the placements of devices, as well as evaluate cardiomyopathy and heart failure. This test serves as a mechanism for prevention, early diagnosis and prevents long-term complications.

CONTRAST ENHANCED ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY

Test performed using contrast or dye to see the flow of blood through the heart and heart muscle.

CARDIAC EXERCISE STRESS TESTING

An exercise test performed on a treadmill to determine how well a patient’s heart can handle work. The test looks at heart rate, blood pressure, electrocardiogram (EKG) and generally how you feel after a brisk walk or run. Through this test, we can predict if a patient is at risk of a heart attack.

Stress Echocardiography: Following the stress test, an echocardiogram is performed to take a closer look at the heart.

CARDIAC NUCLEAR IMAGING

A procedure that uses a small amount of radioactive material and a special camera to determine if the heart is diseased. This procedure is used in cases where patients are not able to complete an exercise stress test.

CARDIAC CT

An imaging test using iodine that shows blockages in heart arteries. This test is usually performed on patients that complain of angina or chest discomfort.

TILT TABLE TESTING

This test is primarily done on patients that are admitted to the hospital and done to determine why they faint or become light headed. The test triggers symptoms and measures your blood pressure to determine why the fainting is occurring.

Children with heart concerns can be tested close to home, too. The hospital also provides cardiac care and testing for our tiniest patients in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in collaboration with the pediatric cardiologist.
