Shaping a Unique Space for ICU Families

When complete in 2025, Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center will be home to one of the only outdoor family lounges for Intensive Care Unit visitors.

This new visiting area concept is part of a broad focus on evidence-based design — a technique that uses research to make design decisions – by the team planning the hospital’s new patient tower. In the case of Shady Grove Medical Center, the team makes data-backed design decisions focused on improving patient outcomes and visitor experiences.

“Research shows that access to nature, natural light and fresh air can positively impact physical and mental health,” says Todd Cohen, Associate Vice President of Facilities and Real Estate at Adventist HealthCare. “We’re being very intentional about incorporating these elements throughout the new patient tower — and our outdoor ICU family lounge is a great example.”

The lounge incorporates a design unique to the care setting. It brings nature closer to ICU visitors. “I don’t know of any other ICUs in Montgomery County — or elsewhere — with an outdoor lounge attached directly to the patient care unit,” says Todd.

When complete, the new outdoor ICU family lounge will sit directly above the emergency department waiting room. The 30-feet by 30-feet space — about the size of half a tennis court — will include trees, benches and other seating areas. The new patient tower ICU will also have a traditional indoor lounge for guests.

“People visiting someone in the ICU want and need to take breaks,” Todd says. “But they often don’t want to go far from their loved one. We’re creating a space close to the care environment but different enough, so visitors feel like they’ve stepped away to rest and refresh.”
