Spring is a time to refresh and renew, and what better way than to declutter and clean your space, both at work and home.
About 72% of households participate in spring cleaning every year. There are many benefits to cleaning your surroundings, including benefits for your physical and mental health. While spring cleaning may seem like an overwhelming task, it is the perfect time for new beginnings. Here are some things that spring cleaning can do for you:
A study showed that people who had homes that were organized and clean had lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, compared to people who had cluttered homes filled with unfinished projects. In addition to having higher cortisol levels, the people with cluttered homes were more likely to be depressed or fatigued.
CLEANLINESS LEADS TO LESS SICK DAYS
Spaces that are cluttered and dirty can lead to a build-up of dust mites, pollen, molds, bacteria, and viruses. All these factors can contribute to colds, itchy eyes, congestion or a runny nose.
WAYS TO START SPRING CLEANING:
- Go through your wardrobe and donate any clothes that no longer fit, or you no longer wear.
- Go through your medicine and toiletries, throw out anything that is expired or no longer useful.
- Go through your pantry and throw out any expired or stale food items.
- Try using a multipurpose cleaner so you don’t have to buy and use multiple cleaners throughout the house.
- Clean and declutter to your own level of comfort.
- Use safe cleaning products.
- Use this time to clean out and discard expired items.
- Set small goals and slowly work towards them by cleaning only 10 minutes a day.
- Make it a fun activity with music or including friends and family.
