What’s the Dirt? The Latest on Shady Grove Medical Center’s Tower Construction
Welcome to the first of many construction updates for Shady Grove Medical Center’s patient tower. Here, we’ll highlight activities from early June 2023 and upcoming key milestones. Let's dig in!
- Sanitary System: The building’s sanitary system has made considerable progress across what used to be the driveway to our former Emergency Department entrance. As a reminder, walk-in patients needing emergency services can access care through a dedicated door at the hospital’s main entrance.
- Piping System: A new mechanical piping system is nearing completion.
- Bye, bye, canopy! The metal canopy, which was a familiar architectural feature over the former Emergency Department entrance, is being demolished. Most of the demolition is completed, with some minor detailing work still in progress. Within the next few weeks, waterproofing will be applied to the existing building increase its longevity and resilience.
- Soldier Piles: The installation of soldier piles, which are underground structural beams, is complete.
- Can You Dig It? YES! With piles in place, crews are preparing for the first floor’s excavation, which is scheduled to happen throughout June. This represents a significant step in the Shady Grove Medical Center tower project.
- Emergency Power Cable: By mid-June, we will transition the emergency power cable from a temporary configuration to a permanent underground duct bank. Doing this ensures a reliable power supply for the facility.
