Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak: Intensive Rehab for Successful Outcomes
Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation has expanded its acute rehabilitation care options with the addition of Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak. Located on the sixth and seventh floors of Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center, this new inpatient rehabilitation facility provides Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)-accredited acute rehabilitation in east Montgomery County.
The 42-bed facility offers:
- Ceiling track lifts in every room for a greater range of motion
- Fully private patient rooms
- Natural lighting throughout the facility
- Spacious day rooms for patients and visitors
- State-of-the-art technology systems
- Therapy gyms on each floor
“We used direct feedback from patients and staff to conceptualize the White Oak facility,” said Rob Grange, vice president of Post-Acute Care Services and administrator at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak. “Our specific design and technology decisions create an improved patient experience and allow our team members to provide more efficient patient care.”
The Acute Rehabilitation Difference
Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak is an inpatient facility helping patients recover and regain skills for daily living after major life-changing illnesses and injuries, including stroke, trauma, brain and spinal cord injuries, and amputation. An outpatient facility in the adjacent medical pavilion ensures specialized rehabilitation care continues after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation.
Acute rehabilitation services offer a more intense program than other rehabilitation providers. Patients are expected to recover, and they often spend shorter amounts of time in care than patients in skilled nursing facilities.
“Acute rehabilitation care services are often confused with skilled nursing facility services, which are delivered in a nursing home facility,” Rob said. “Regulations for acute rehabilitation care are more stringent, and at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak, we go above and beyond to meet those requirements.”
Rehab services at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak include:
- Increased face-to-face physician interaction, occurring daily
- Increased access to physical and occupational therapy services, along with speech-language pathology
- Intensive patient therapy averaging 16.5 hours a week, which is well above the minimum required
Additionally, the facility’s location within the Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center allows patients to easily transition from acute care to inpatient rehab and back to their lives at home once care is complete.
“Our therapeutic recreation specialists focus on community reintegration because it’s so often forgotten during patient care,” Rob said. “They consider what is most important to the patient beyond access to medication management and at-home health services. Basic activities such as getting back to playing guitar or boating allow for patients to fully return to their lives.”
Personalized Patient Care From an Expert Team
At Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak, personalized acute rehabilitation care starts with a dedicated and diverse team.
“The people at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak really want to be here and love what they do,” Rob said. “The way our team approaches healing and intervention is proof of this commitment. We approach our patients holistically.”
There are seven physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, or physiatrists at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation, three of whom practice at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak. Additional providers include:
- Physiatrists certified to treat several forms of brain injuries
- Credentialed physicians in orthopedics, podiatry and oncology
- Two internal medicine physicians available seven days a week, 24 hours a day
Specialty Services and Holistic Care
Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak relies on several subspecialty and support services to provide well-rounded patient care. Along with board-certified physicians providing around-the-clock patient coverage, patients can count on team members certified in these subspecialties and supportive areas, including:
- Amputee care
- Brain and spinal cord injuries
- Neuropsychology
- Stroke care
Our full-spectrum care includes mental and spiritual wellness through community partnerships with organizations such as the Stroke Comeback Center and Disability Partnerships, an organization dedicated to enhancing quality of life for individuals living with physical disabilities.
Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak also displays inspiring work by artists such as the late Michael Monaco, who was paralyzed in an accident in 1979. He became a member of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, an association owned and managed by artists living with disabilities. Surrounded by the facility’s natural light and spacious design, the artwork encourages patients and visitors throughout their treatment and recovery.
Emotional recovery also comes on four legs with a facility dog named Peru. Trained by Canine Companions, Peru is a Labrador Retriever that provides comfort and calms patients at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak.
“Peru helps patients engage with their therapy on a deeper level,” Rob said. “It’s been amazing to see the impact an animal has on our patients’ healing.”
Acute Rehabilitation Care With a Commitment to the Future
Opening Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak is just another step Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation has taken to improve rehab services in the community. The goal is to provide quality, convenient care.
“At Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation White Oak, we emphasize hope,” Rob said. “Patients who have experienced our care have been treated by a compassionate team who delivers positive outcomes.”
