Wings Like Eagles

Wings Like Eagles

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles” —Isaiah 40:31(NIV)

The picture presented in this scripture passage of an eagle soaring high over the earth is so compelling! On days when there is so much to do, problems that must be faced and distractions that must be addressed, I think of that eagle and it comforts me.

The promise of the text is that those “who hope in the Lord” will renew their strength and soar as if on eagles’ wings! Hope in God enables us to focus on our specific goals, size up the situations that face us, and then move forward with confidence—to soar like an eagle!

But this passage is not just about that initial burst of enthusiasm that accompanies a new project or responsibility. “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength” conveys the recognition that we do get tired from doing too much for too long. As a result, we can begin to feel burned out and doubt our ability to persevere. In direct response, the passage reassures us that we can depend on God to renew our focus, renew our confidence, renew our vision, renew our capacity. We don’t have to depend upon our own strength. We can entrust our fatigue, doubts and struggles to God and our strength will be renewed.

I believe that hope and healing are closely aligned. Our Mission at Adventist HealthCare – to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing – is a Mission of hope. Hoping in the Lord renews the resources of the heart and spirit needed for your health and well-being. Our service to promote the best health outcomes is the task that we take up every single day and – renewed by our hope in God’s empowering love and grace – we soar on eagles’ wings!
