Words of My Mouth, Meditation of My Heart

Some of my earliest childhood recollections are associated with learning the words of the Bible in the form of “memory verses,” that is, short passages that were committed to memory so that they could be easily recalled at important moments in life. My first memory verses were very short, but as I grew, the verses that I memorized became longer and more nuanced to help guide both my thinking and acting.

Psalms 19:14 is a special memory verse that I have cherished. “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer (NLT).

I learned from this verse three important ideas that are sometimes not easy goals to achieve, but are the high standards I know we all share here at Adventist HealthCare:

First, words matter. What we say influences what happens around us and what happens to us. Our goal should be to speak in ways that are acceptable to God.

Second, it’s not just what is said that is important, it is also what is unsaid. We should strive to have how we think be in alignment with God because, as Jesus explained, “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45, GNT).

Third, the power to live our lives with our hearts and minds fully in harmony with each other comes from God. In our interactions with one another, with our patients and with their families, and with all the various individuals we encounter each day – God is our strength. And when divine love is what fills our hearts, it will fill our speech as well. It will bring God’s grace to each interaction. It will bring our Mission to life.

As a faith-based organization with the Mission to extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing, there can be no doubt of the importance of the integrity we must uphold in everything that we think, do and say. Thank you for joining together in our shared commitment to serve others with our whole selves.
