Why did the Germantown Emergency Center close?
When Germantown Emergency Center opened, the 24/7 emergency room filled a gap in acute-care health services in upper Montgomery County. An extension of Shady Grove Medical Center, the center was convenient for patients in upper Montgomery County who might later be transferred for inpatient care in Rockville.
Today, the healthcare landscape in Germantown has developed substantially. An acute-care hospital opened 2 miles from the center and numerous urgent care sites serve residents. Fewer residents use the center. Most of its cases are lower-acuity conditions that should be treated at primary or urgent care rather than a full-service emergency room.
Closing the center has allowed Adventist HealthCare to refocus its resources to better meet the needs we're currently seeing in upper Montgomery County.

Because the Germantown Emergency Center had always been a part of Shady Grove’s Emergency Department, patients can access the same compassionate, whole-person care in our Rockville location. In June, emergency and critical care patients benefited as a newly designed Emergency Department opened in Rockville, with state-of-the-art care spaces carefully positioned for maximum efficiency.

Adventist HealthCare will continue to lease and secure the space through mid-2027. The site was decommissioned on July 1, 2026. Any sensitive medical items and equipment is being removed.
The Adventist HealthCare Imaging site next door to the center is not impacted and will remain open to care for patients.
