National Doctors' Day

National Doctors' DayMarch 30th is National Doctors' Day. It is a day to celebrate the contribution of physicians who serve our community by caring for its citizens.

Thank You to Our Doctors

At Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, it is our mission to improve the health of people and communities. Physicians play a vital role as we work towards fulfilling this mission. On Doctors’ Day, I invite you to join me in expressing appreciation to the physicians that serve on our medical staff at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.

This annual celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication that physicians demonstrate in our hospital and in the community each day. In honor of Doctors’ Day, I invite you to take a moment to thank a physician by sending an electronic thank you card, making a donation in their honor to our Foundation, nominating a physician for the RISES Award or sharing your story of dedicated, compassionate care online. Thank you for taking the time to recognize our physicians.

The History of Doctor's Day

The first Doctors' Day observance was March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to set aside a day to honor physicians. This first observance included the mailing greeting cards and placing flowers on graves of deceased doctors. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors' Day.

On March 30, 1958, a Resolution Commemorating Doctors' Day was adopted by the United States House of Representatives. In 1990, legislation was introduced in the House and Senate to establish a national Doctor's Day. Following overwhelming approval by the United States Senate and the House of Representatives, on October 30, 1990, President George Bush signed S.J. RES. #366 (which became Public Law 101-473) designating March 30th as "National Doctor's Day."
