Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center’s NICU Achieves 1,000 Days Without Central-Line Infection
Rockville, MD – The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center recently celebrated a major milestone–1,000 days without a Central-Line associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI). More than two and a half years without infection means that the hospital’s tiniest patients have a better opportunity to grow and thrive in a safe, healthy setting.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) an estimated 30,100 CLABSIs still occur in intensive care units and wards of U.S. acute care facilities each year. CLABSIs are serious infections typically causing a prolongation of hospital stay and increased cost and risk of mortality. These infections are particularly dangerous to babies in the NICU because they tend to be immunosuppressed and more susceptible to disease and infection.
"Our NICU team is amazing --- in so many ways. Achieving the milestone of 1,000 consecutive days without a Central-Line associated Bloodstream Infection in our patients demonstrates the commitment of each and every member of the team to provide the highest quality of care that can be found in any NICU, anywhere,” said Dr. Jim Rost, Medical Director of Pediatrics and the NICU for Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.
