Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation Awarded Grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation
Rockville, MD – Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation has received a Quality of Life grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to improve the lives of people living with paralysis. The award was one of 102 grants awarded by the foundation to nonprofit organizations nationwide that improve opportunities, access and day-to-day quality of life for individuals with paralysis, their families and caregivers.
“We are honored to receive this generous grant from the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation,” said Brent Reitz, president of Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation. “These funds will enable us to help patients with disabilities to live independent and active lives.”
Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation will use the grant to purchase specialty exercise equipment for patients with neurological impairments. Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation is the first and only acute rehabilitation hospital in Montgomery County and offers comprehensive rehabilitation programs for: traumatic brain injuries; spinal cord injuries; strokes; amputations; orthopedic injuries and surgeries; sports related injuries; work-related injuries; cardiopulmonary conditions; and neurological disorders.
Christopher Reeve was a movie actor known for his portrayal of Superman in the 1978 film. He became a quadriplegic in 1995, following an equestrian competition accident. He then dedicated years of his life lobbying in support of those suffering from spinal cord injuries. He passed away in 2004.
Conceived by his wife, the late Dana Reeve, the Reeve foundation has awarded more than 2,900 grants exceeding $20 million since 1999. Funding for the grants is made available through the Paralysis Resource Center operated by the Reeve Foundation under a cooperative agreement with the Administration for Community Living in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
