Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center Top Rated for Heart Surgery in North America

Silver Spring, Md.Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center has achieved the highest quality rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for its patient care and outcomes for Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery, Aortic Valve Replacement surgery and Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement surgery – three main types of heart surgery.

Earning a distinguished three-star rating, places White Oak Medical Center among the elite in heart surgery in North America. Historically, approximately only 4-8% of hospitals receive the three-star rating for Aortic Valve surgery; 6-10% of hospitals receive the distinction for bypass surgery. The STS star-rating system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in healthcare.

"This achievement is an true honor but more importantly it gives our heart surgery patients confidence that White Oak Medical Center provides high-quality care and excellent outcomes," said Paul Massimiano, MD, cardiac surgeon and medical director for Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery.

The STS analyzes heart surgery quality measures across the U.S. and Canada to determine which hospitals meet the stringent award criteria by measuring patient outcomes, processes and consistent use of evidence-based care throughout a patient’s hospitalization.

The hospital has received three-star ratings for the past five years.

"I want to commend our cardiac team for their commitment to excellence," said Anthony Stahl, president of Adventist HealthCare White Oak Medical Center. Our cardiac program has long been nationally recognized for its quality and we’re privileged to continue to provide our community with the best possible heart care.

White Oak Medical Center’s heart program offers a comprehensive array of minimally invasive heart treatments and unique expertise in minimally invasive heart surgery. People experiencing signs of a heart attack, such as tightness in the chest, pain or discomfort in the neck, jaw or arms, or shortness of breath, or fatigue should call 9-1-1 immediately.
