After An Unexpected Roadside Birth, Mom and Twins Receive Unforgettable Support at Shady Grove Medical Center
ROCKVILLE, MD – What began with contractions and a drive to the hospital quickly turned into an unforgettable birth story for one local family, one that included the expert maternity care team at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.
The parents, a family from Rockville, Md., were expecting twin girls near the end of February. Shortly after beginning their drive, contractions intensified and labor progressed faster than anticipated. They called 911 and were instructed to pull safely to the side of Interstate 270 near the Falls Road exit, turning on their hazard lights as first responders rushed to meet them.
First responders from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue arrived quickly. Within minutes of their arrival, at 7:13 a.m., Baby Girl A was born, weighing 4 pounds, 6 ounces. The newborn was transported to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, where clinical teams were already preparing to receive her and mom, who was still awaiting the arrival of Baby Girl B.
Throughout the experience, the parents shared their appreciation for the calm, coordinated communication between first responders and the Shady Grove Medical Center care team, which helped guide them through an intense and emotional moment. Labor and delivery nurse Caitlin Keser reassured the mother, helping create a steady, supportive environment and a sense of confidence that her baby was receiving excellent care. That reassurance allowed the mother to rest as the team prepared for the arrival of the second twin.
At 7:52 a.m., the team at Shady Grove Medical Center helped the family welcome Baby B, weighing 3 pounds, 7 ounces.
“While we care for many babies every day and train extensively for unexpected situations, a birth on I-270 is something we see only from time to time. Welcoming twins in that circumstance made it especially meaningful,” said Amber Richter, RN, director of Women’s and Infants’ Services at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. “Watching our teams and community partners work together so seamlessly was incredibly rewarding. It was a joyful moment, and one we won’t forget.”
The mother, a former nurse, expressed appreciation for the professionalism, compassion and clear communication provided by the care team. The couple, who also has a toddler at home, shared that they are looking forward to being together as a family of five.
When asked what they will one day tell their daughters about the day they were born, the parents said they will speak highly of the first responders, nurses and healthcare providers who cared for them, emphasizing trust, teamwork and doing what is best in moments of uncertainty.
The father repeatedly shared gratitude for the Shady Grove Medical Center team, noting that their steady guidance and support allowed the family to place their trust — and their peace of mind — in capable hands so they could focus on welcoming their daughters.
Both babies and their mother are doing well and resting. While their story began in an unexpected place, the family quickly found themselves surrounded by a team experienced in caring for even the most complex and fast-moving deliveries. Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center’s Birth Center delivers thousands of babies each year and offers comprehensive care for mothers and newborns, including support for high-risk pregnancies, advanced neonatal services and a highly trained team prepared to respond calmly and confidently in unexpected moments like this one.
