When children, adolescents or adults experience mental health symptoms that need immediate care, inpatient treatment can help. Adventist HealthCare’s inpatient programs stabilize behavioral health conditions so you, your loved one or your client stays safe, functions better and returns to the community as soon as possible.

Multidisciplinary Team

Trust the experts on Adventist HealthCare’s multidisciplinary behavioral health team to provide well-rounded care. Our professionals include board-certified psychiatrists (such as child and adolescent psychiatrists affiliated with Georgetown University Hospital), social workers, case managers, psychiatric nurses, therapists and chaplains.

Inpatient Programs for All Age Groups

Turn to us for excellent inpatient behavioral and mental health care for people at least 8 years old.


In a safe, structured setting supervised 24 hours a day, children ages 8–12 explore the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and actions. Children attend school sessions in the treatment facility on weekdays and spend time in our gym and/or outdoor courtyard daily. Your family will appreciate our child-friendly facilities and semi-private rooms at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.


Youths ages 13–17 benefit from a secure, structured, therapeutic environment at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. In the Chesapeake unit, patients build social and communication skills in bright, welcoming facilities with large communal areas, including a gym and courtyard. Improve your loved one’s outcome by attending family meetings during treatment. Staffers work with your child’s school to coordinate an education plan and support the transition back to school.


Adults who experience mental health or substance abuse challenges journey toward recovery with compassionate care in one of these locations.

  • Montgomery Unit for mood disorders, Adults get access to treatment 24 hours a day for symptoms of depression, anxiety and/or trauma; help establish treatment goals; and work with staff to plan for a successful to the community. Designed for independent adults, this unit offers the least restrictive inpatient care.
  • Potomac Unit for severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI), Find care that quickly stabilizes schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder and other serious conditions. You’ll appreciate our skilled clinical team that’s experienced in treating acute symptoms, such as psychosis (delusions or hallucinations) and suicidal behaviors. Intensive case management and comprehensive wraparound services help your loved one safely return to the community.
  • Seneca & Azalea Units for mental illness and co-occurring disorders, Take advantage of treatment for mental health conditions that occur with or without substance abuse symptoms. If your loved one or client experiences co-occurring disorders, the unit will provide recovery support and education.
  • Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital, Takoma Park – Rely on psychiatric and substance abuse services, including a three- to five-day detox program. Your loved one or client will be in safe hands thanks to clinical evaluation and crisis intervention services available 24 hours a day.

Geriatric Adults

Seniors benefit from specialized therapy at the Magnolia Unit for geriatric adults at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. Board-certified geriatric psychiatrists and other geriatric specialists help older adults manage depression, anxiety and other conditions that follow life’s losses and changes. Your loved one or client will gain coping skills, learn how to build supportive relationships, and discover how to take advantage of community resources. He or she will appreciate our minimally restrictive environment, which includes a private courtyard and a shared kitchenette.
