Supportive Care & Symptom Relief

Look to the compassionate staff at Adventist HealthCare for options to manage symptoms of cancer and its treatments.

Symptom Relief Services

Your comfort and safety during your cancer journey are our focus. Depending on your needs, your care team may recommend:

  • Antibiotic therapy – Fights infections that may happen during cancer treatment and may reduce side effects of certain therapies
  • Blood transfusions – Gives your body healthy blood cells to replace those lost due to cancer or its treatments
  • Growth factor injections – Boost your bone marrow’s ability to make blood cells and restore cells lost during chemotherapy
  • Iron infusions – Deliver iron to your body to treat symptoms like fatigue or weakness if anemia (lack of hemoglobin in the blood) happens during cancer or its treatment
  • Lymphedema therapy – Treats swelling that sometimes happens during cancer treatment
  • Pain management – Lessens discomfort to help you feel better

Cancer Support Services

Choose from a broad range of services designed to help you feel better physically and emotionally. You and your loved ones may benefit from:

  • Healing arts – Creative ways to express and cope with feelings
  • Home health care – Skilled nursing care and homemaking assistance that takes place in the comfort of your home
  • Integrative medicine – Complementary therapies for your mind, body and spirit
  • Massage therapy – Hands-on relaxation care to lessen pain and stress
  • Mental health care – Counseling and emotional support to help you cope
  • Nutritional counseling – Education to choose and prepare healthy, easy-to-eat foods that boost your body’s strength and immunity
  • Palliative care – Symptom relief
  • Tobacco cessation – Help to stop smoking or using tobacco

IV Rehydration

Cancer treatment can lead to dehydration, or not enough water in your body. If you feel nauseous or can’t take in enough fluids by mouth, your doctor may recommend intravenous (IV) rehydration. Children are more likely than adults to need IV rehydration, which provides water and electrolytes through a thin tube inserted into a vein.

Support Groups & Classes

Share your story and find friendship in a healing environment. We offer a wide range of support groups and classes for people with cancer, their family members and friends – including events for people with the same types of cancer or concerns. You may benefit from:

  • Cooking classes
  • Look Good…Feel Better®, a program open to all women with cancer that offers confidence-building services from cosmetologists and beauticians
  • Wellness classes on yoga, meditation and mindfulness

Cancer Library & Education

Learning about cancer lets you take a more active role in your health and feel better prepared. Expect your care team to listen and answer your questions, and recommend resources, such as:

  • Stephen J. Newman Oncology Library at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, a library open 24 hours a day where you can use a computer and borrow books, pamphlets and videos to read or watch at the hospital. Dial extension 6101 within the medical center for more information about the library.
  • Online health library, which offers articles and interactive tools about cancer and related topics

Holistic Approach

You heal best when you get care for not just your body, but also your everyday concerns. When you begin medical treatment at Adventist HealthCare, we’ll ask what else you might need help with, including:

  • Emotional issues, like anxiety or depression
  • Family relationships
  • Physical symptoms, such as nausea or pain
  • Practical matters, such as child care, insurance, transportation or housing
  • Spiritual and religious concerns

Your nurse will refer you to professionals who can offer assistance and support.
