Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)

If you experience chest pain or discomfort, including persistent angina, and surgery or medications haven't brought you relief, you may be a candidate for an innovative, nonsurgical option called enhanced external counterpulsation or EECP.

Take advantage of the extensive staff expertise and outstanding facilities in the only hospital-based EECP program in Montgomery County. You'll find everything you need at the Center for Fitness & Health at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center.

How You Benefit from EECP

Because EECP is a noninvasive outpatient procedure that doesn't require a hospital stay, you're able to fit it into your normal routine and return to your typical activities each day after treatment. In addition, EECP:

  • Relieves angina (chest pain)
  • Reduces shortness of breath and fatigue
  • Increases exercise tolerance and energy level
  • Decreases need for nitroglycerin
  • Improves your quality of life

In fact, you may be among the many who experience a surge in energy just two to four weeks into the therapy, which often means you're able to begin a healthy exercise program.

How EECP Works

In a series of 35 one-hour treatments held Monday through Friday for seven weeks, you'll have inflatable cuffs placed on your legs while you rest. Using special timing, the cuffs inflate and deflate with each heartbeat to improve blood flow and circulation to your heart.

Am I a Candidate for EECP?

Your doctor must review your medical history, conduct a physical exam and make a referral for you to be considered for EECP. The procedure may be right for you if:

  • You have angina
  • Your heart medications no longer relieve your symptoms
  • You are not a candidate for heart surgery or other interventions

You may not be eligible for EECP if you have blood clots or other vascular health concerns.

If you meet certain criteria, most private insurance plans and Medicare cover EECP treatments.
