Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Trust the expert, patient-focused doctors and medical staff at Adventist HealthCare to give your baby the extra attention required in a high-risk situation, including prematurity, multiple births and special needs.

Special Care for Special-Needs Babies

At Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, you’ll find one of the most comprehensive Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) in the region—Level III—to care for your premature baby or newborn with special needs. We treat babies with a prematurity of 28 weeks’ gestation or less and low birth weights of approximately 35 ounces or less.

And at Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital, you’ll have access to a Special Care Nursery staffed 24/7 with neonatologists, pediatricians, and nurses certified in neonatal care and obstetrics for your baby with extra medical needs.

Advanced NICU Care for Your Newborn

If your newborn needs critical care, Shady Grove Medical Center’s NICU offers continuous ventilator support and life-saving equipment designed especially for infants. You’ll also find doctors who specialize in newborn care (neonatologists) and neonatal nurses, all of whom are trained to care for the most complex medical situations.

In fact, other hospitals in the area transport their newborns who need this level of care to Shady Grove Medical Center’s NICU. Our services include:

  • Highly skilled nursing and respiratory care staff
  • Advanced respiratory support and monitoring equipment
  • Laboratory and imaging facilities
  • Pediatrics-focused nutrition and pharmacy support
  • Social services
  • Spiritual care

You’re assured of receiving quality care for a critically ill newborn at the Shady Grove Medical Center NICU. Our efforts have even been honored with a gold medal award from the Maryland Patient Safety Center (MPSC) Neonatal Collaborative.

Family-Focused Attention & Support

The thought of your child needing intensive medical care can raise many concerns. It’s why our compassionate medical staff works hard to make sure you understand your newborn’s situation and treatment plan.

You're an essential member of your baby’s healthcare team, and we encourage you to stay with your infant as much as possible. Get involved, ask questions and learn more about caring for your child’s situation by being present each day at 10 a.m. during rounds for the NICU’s doctors. You can also reach out to us any time after rounds to talk about your baby’s care, offer support and address questions or concerns.

A Focus on Your Breast Milk

We understand the importance of providing your special-needs infant with the best nutrition available. We make every effort to feed your baby your breast milk when possible and always make sure to mix in added nutrients as needed to support your baby’s development. A NICU nurse can give you more information about how to ensure your breast milk is ready on time each day for your baby’s feeding.
