Counseling, Therapy & Psychiatry
If you’re feeling anxious, sad or overwhelmed, you don’t have to deal with these emotions on your own. Request an in-person or video visit with the mental health team at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville. You’ll receive support and tools to take control of your well-being.
What Is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry is medical care that focuses on mental health and well-being. A specially trained doctor, called a psychiatrist, leads your treatment. This expert looks at both your mental and physical health.
Your psychiatrist may prescribe medicine to help with mental health symptoms. They may also suggest other types of care. Most psychiatric medicines come as pills. Some are available as long-lasting shots. These shots are given less often to make treatment easier.
Your psychiatrist works closely with other healthcare providers. This may include your therapist. Together, they create a treatment plan that fits your needs. Their goal is to support your journey to feeling better.
What Is Counseling & Therapy?
Counseling, also known as talk therapy, helps you identify and work through mental health challenges, such as:
- Life changes
- Loss and grief
- Phobias
- Relationship conflicts
- Self-esteem issues
- Stress management
- Trauma
Individual Therapy
During one-on-one sessions, you share your thoughts in a safe, nonjudgmental space. Your therapist listens to what’s going on in your life, helps you explore the reasons behind your emotions, and works with you to find ways to manage them. This process can help you better understand yourself and create positive changes.
Couples or Family Therapy (Outpatient Only)
Couples or family therapy helps you improve your relationships with loved ones. It gives everyone an opportunity to talk about their feelings and learn better ways to communicate. A therapist guides the conversations, helping you understand each other’s points of view. The goal is to create a healthier, happier relationship or family life.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is a way for you to connect with people facing similar challenges. In a supportive setting, you share your thoughts and feelings while hearing from others. A therapist leads the group, helping everyone explore their experiences and learn from one another.
