Mammograms | Maryland | Adventist HealthCare

One in eight women in the US will develop breast cancer in her life. Adventist HealthCare Imaging offers a range of quality screenings to support early detection of breast cancer.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray of the breast that can show changes in the tissue, including signs of cancer that cannot be felt during a breast exam. Mammograms are the most important screening tool for breast cancer and can lead to early diagnosis and reduced risk of death.

Types of Mammograms

Adventist HealthCare offers the following types of mammograms:

Digital Mammogram (2D Mammogram)

Adventist HealthCare imaging centers uses digital mammography, so you’ll get quicker, more accurate test results—sometimes delivered during the same visit as your exam. This technology means you don’t have to wait for film to be developed, and the radiologist can easily magnify or enhance images for a clearer view. Your radiologist also may use computer-aided detection to better spot abnormalities

3D Mammogram (Tomosynthesis)

Digital breast tomosynthesis, which is also known as 3D mammography, is an advanced diagnostic and screening technology that can improve the early detection of breast cancer. This advanced procedure also reduces the likelihood you’ll need additional imaging, such as breast ultrasound or breast MRI.

3D Mammogram Benefits

A 3D mammogram allows radiologists to view breast tissue one layer at a time, providing more visibility to fine details of the breast tissue. 3D mammography increases the ability to detect breast cancer by 30% when compared to the standard 2D mammograms. 3D mammograms can reduce the need for additional pictures when there is an area of mass or density on the mammogram. However, they are not a substitute for other screening tools like breast MRI or breast ultrasound.

Who Should Consider a 3D Mammogram?

Request 3D mammography for your breast cancer screening and increase your odds of detecting the disease early. All women can benefit from a 3D mammogram but you’ll especially want to ask for 3D mammography if you have:

  • Dense breasts, which can be determined only by a mammogram and make it harder to detect abnormal tissue
  • A family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer

Will My Insurance Cover 3D Mammograms?

Please note that not all insurance plans cover 3D mammography. Please check with your insurance provider before scheduling your appointment.
