Speech, Language & Swallowing Therapy

Speech-language pathologists at Adventist HealthCare Rehabilitation can help your loved one who’s at least 18 better communicate, think and swallow foods. We teach skills he or she needs to improve relationships, more easily complete everyday tasks and get proper nutrition.

Who Speech Therapy Benefits

Your loved one may benefit from speech therapy if he or she experiences aphasia, or difficulty:

  • Understanding spoken or written language
  • Speaking clearly and with strength
  • Writing
  • Keeping track of people, places and time
  • Maintaining thinking, language and organizational skills needed to manage finances, medication and daily activities

Lee Silverman Voice Treatment

If your loved one has Parkinson’s disease or another neurological disorder, he or she may speak better with help from Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), an evidence-based, highly effective program. LSVT LOUD® uses exercises to help patients amplify their voices and feel comfortable speaking louder in everyday conversations.

Your loved one also may benefit from LSVT BIG®, which trains him or her to move more expressively and more easily finish daily tasks.

In either program, patients participate in four hour-long therapy sessions each week for one month.

Swallowing Disorders Program

Your loved one may benefit from Adventist HealthCare’s Swallowing Disorders Program if he or she:

  • Coughs, chokes or feels like food is stuck in the throat after swallowing
  • Drools
  • Has experienced aspiration pneumonia (lung infection due to inhaled food or liquid)
  • Has trouble chewing food or clearing it from the mouth
  • Spits out saliva, food or liquid

Dysphagia Treatments & Services

A speech-language pathologist may recommend one or more of the following services and treatments for dysphagia (trouble swallowing):

  • Swallowing evaluation and imaging studies
  • Exercises to improve muscle movement in the mouth and throat
  • Head and neck positions that make swallowing easier
  • Foods and liquids that are safer to swallow
  • VitalStim® Therapy, which uses gentle electrical stimulation to train throat muscles to work normally
  • Synchrony, which strengthens throat muscles and employs biofeedback to show patients how well they swallow during game-like activities; Adventist HealthCare is the only area outpatient facility to offer this innovative therapy
