Barry Greene, MDBarry Greene, MD
Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery

Dr. Green is a board-certified General Surgeon and a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine and the Wright State University School of Medicine/USAF Integrated General Surgery Residency. He then developed a laparoscopic surgery program while he was Assistant Clinical Professor at Wright State University. Dr. Greene has continued to teach laparoscopic, endoscopic and, most recently, robotic surgery to both residents and surgeons. He has received numerous honors, including the Air Force Commendation Medal and Oak Leaf.

Dr. Greene has held quality improvement positions for his entire career. He founded the Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery at Shady Grove in 2006. In addition to serving as Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center, he serves as a site inspector for the ASMBS quality improvement program.

With the help of colleagues, Dr. Greene founded the Maryland Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and was elected as the chapter’s first president. Dr. Greene has performed more than 2,500 bariatric procedures with complication rates among the lowest in the country.

Tuesday F. A. Cook, MDTuesday F. A. Cook, MD

Dr. Tuesday F. A. Cook is a fellowship-trained Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon. She is a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation Quality Improvement Program Verified Surgeon, certified by the American College of Surgeons. She was also recently inducted as a Fellow into the American College of Surgeons. She received her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine and completed a general surgery residency at Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. She then completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Pennsylvania State University Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. She is board-certified in General Surgery and has served as a Clinical Instructor both in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Dr. Cook has practiced as a bariatric, minimally invasive and general surgeon in Maryland since 2008, performing a variety of minimally invasive procedures, including laparoscopic hernia repairs, laparoscopic anti-reflux operations, laparoscopic gallbladder removal and laparoscopic colon resections. Her special interests include minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery, including procedures for the treatment of achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux disease, paraesophageal hiatal hernias and colon resection. She was one of the first 15 physicians in the U.S. trained on the placement and management of FDA-approved intragastric balloons and currently places them both endoscopically as well as in her office. She also frequently volunteers her surgical skills on medical missions in other countries.

Dr. Cook is a fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. She is also a member of the American Medical Association. She serves on the Executive Board of the Montgomery County Medical Society, acting as Chairperson of the Women in Medicine Committee and is the Secretary of the Board for the Maryland State Chapter of the ASMBS. She has lectured to various audiences about metabolic and bariatric procedures, care of the bariatric patient and gastrointestinal diseases.

Etwar McBean, MD, FACSEtwar McBean, MD, FACS

Dr. McBean is a board-certified, fellowship-trained general and bariatric surgeon. Dr. McBean graduated from the University of The West Indies Medical School and trained in general surgery at Howard University Hospital in Washington. He completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Fla. In addition, he holds an MBA in Health Care Management from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. McBean is a member of the American College of Surgeons; the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery; the American Hernia Society; and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. Dr. McBean is committed to high-quality outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Yulia Eskin, MSN, CRNP-AYulia Eskin, MSN, CRNP-A
Program Coordinator

Yulia is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as an Adult Nurse Practitioner. She received her bachelor’s degree from Tel-Aviv University in Israel and a Master’s of Science in Nursing from George Mason University. She is a member of the American Association for Nurse Practitioners. Prior to joining our team, Yulia worked as a Nurse Practitioner in the areas of primary care and oncology.

As the Bariatric Program Coordinator, she works closely with the Bariatric surgeons to coordinate all phases of the preoperative and postoperative process to maintain exceptional patient care. As a Bariatric patient, you will work closely with Yulia, from your first preoperative experience here at Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center onward, as we provide support and encouragement needed for long-term success.

Yulia also coordinates Bariatric care throughout the hospital to ensure our program’s compliance with quality standards of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

Katherine Polania, RN, CBNKatherine Polania, RN, CBN
Clinical Reviewer and Bariatric Educator

Katherine is a Certified Bariatric Nurse through the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery. At Shady Grove Medical Center, she provides compassionate care to our medical and surgical bariatric patients.

As the Metabolic and Bariatric Clinical Reviewer and Bariatric Educator, Katherine works closely with the members of the Metabolic & Bariatric Program at Shady Grove to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other educational projects. Katherine also provides bariatric education to patients, family members and hospital staff.

Catherine Fore, RD, LDN, CNSC
Bariatric Dietician

Catherine brings years of experience in clinical nutrition and dietetics to the Bariatric team. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including infectious disease, cardiac rehabilitation, and otolaryngology. Catherine is a Certified Adult Weight Management Specialist with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Catherine holds undergraduate degrees in Health and Exercise Science from Furman University and Food Science and Nutrition from Clemson University. She completed her dietetic internship with Sodexo Health Care Services, including clinical rotations at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She is especially interested in the vitamin and mineral requirements for bariatric surgery and enjoys assisting patients with meal planning and time management.
